FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY OGOJA: A CROSS RIVER AGENDA

September 17, 2019

FUTOG

"We don't always have to agree, but we must empower each other, we must find the common ground, we must build bridges across our differences to pursue the common good"
Cory Booker.

Identifying what battle to fight, who to fight alongside with are traits of wise leaders. More so, choosing to fight alongside a perceived 'enemy' who is going to take the glory if there is victory is a valid statement by a leader that he can sacrifice his pride for the common good. It's a prove of loyalty to the people he obliged to vote for him.

The whispers from many quarters why the bill for the establishment of Federal University of Technology, Ogoja (FUTOG) is not getting the needed attention it is yearning for is heartbreaking and portray all Cross Riverians (North, South and Central) as myopic, petty, unambitious and lazy.

May I remind our Southern and Central Cross River brothers who see it as a northern CR agenda that University of Calabar (UNICAL) located in Southern Cross River has its present Vice Chancellor from the north. Same position is rotated among the three senatorial districts.

Today, I was in UNICAL to see four of my friends who are Lecturers, two from Bekwerra, one from Obudu and the other from Yala. Many other Sons and Daughters from Northern and Central CR are gainfully employed in UNICAL despite it's location in Southern CR.

The same system will be replicated in FUTOG if it comes through. So this struggle is a Cross River thing and needs to be pursued as such.

All Politicians from Cross River State who believe in the development of this state should come together and pull their weight to make this lofty dream come through. Time is of the essence!

Some Politicians are giving laughable excuses why the bill will not be assented to just to shy away from fighting for the establishment of the University. You don't have to speculate, give it a shot. Let us see that you have tried to push this bill. Stop sitting on the fence to release unfounded tales. You are not a blogger!

If you are in power today and you decide not to do anything tangible to better the plight of your northern brothers in particular and Cross River in general in terms of pushing for this bill, may I remind you that you won't be in power for ever.

Some day, we will call your names in a roll call that you were in power when this bill was thrown to the dustbin. We will publish yearly, names and positions you held when this bill wasn't assented to.

Giving out cars, keke, monies etc. to supporters cannot be compared to the level of economic growth this University will bring to Cross River. Visit Calabar when UNICAL is not in session, you will understand what I mean.

It's not about Rt. Hon Jarigbe Agom taking the glory, it's about Cross Riverians enjoying the glory.

Eventually, you will be remembered for one thing; it's either you fight for this course or this will become a curse to your grey hair when you retire from politics.
